Homework in 1st Grade
Students should be reading every night for 15 minutes. Students can read independently, read to someone, read with someone or have someone read to them. THE MORE reading and being read to, THE BETTER the reader! In addition to reading, we encourage you to help your child find other ways to extend his or her learning throughout the day. Take a look at some of the extensions below for ideas.

To encourage your child's love of science, create a science journal to keep at home. Have your child:
In Social Studies, think about the world around you. Read biographies of famous Americans. Find, read and create maps together. Can you make a map of your bedroom? Street? Neighborhood? Use google maps to plan a trip. Research a country/culture we are learning about in school (China/Mexico). |

Math Games
Download one of the games below or have your child teach you:
- Pika, Firma, Nada (a version of Mastermind which focuses on place value)
- War/Compare – Use a deck of cards with face cards removed to play war. There are many versions of this that you can try – Addition and/or subtraction compare (both played with 2 cards at a time)
- Familiar board games that you can add a challenge to (e.g. Chutes and Ladders played with 2 dice – find the sum OR Candyland – write addition problems on the back of the cards to solve)
- Counters in a Cup/Hidden objects – Choose an object to work with (e.g. cubes, pennies, caps, counters, legos, etc). Working with 10 or fewer, help your child practice their number combinations by hiding some of them. Your child should know how many objects are hidden based on what number you are working with and how many objects are shown.
