Morning Routine
In 1R, we have a predictable morning routine that will help foster responsibility and independence. Students will hang up their backpacks in their cubbies and put their orange folders in blue bin inside 1R. Next, students should all wash their hands before heading to the easel to read the morning message (a teacher will help with this at the beginning of the year), and then find a book to read while other students arrive. Please say goodbye to your child at the door before they come inside the classroom. By encouraging your child to complete these tasks independently, they will quickly learn the routines and will take pride in the responsibility.
School HoursEvery minute of learning counts! School begins promptly at 8 a.m. and with your support I expect to start on time. I will open the classroom door by 7:55 everyday and Morning Meeting will begin shortly after 8:00. It is important for your child to be on time. If your child arrives after 8:05 a.m. he/she must sign in at the office and will be recorded as tardy.
Dismissal is at 2:30 Monday-Thursday and 1:40 on Fridays. If you are picking up your child, please wait outside the 1R door. We will be matching each student with his/her parent or guardian. Any children remaining in the classroom will be brought to the office 10 minutes after dismissal. Your child’s safety is paramount! If there are any changes concerning how your child is getting home, please send a note in your child’s Take Home folder. Absent/Leaving EarlyWhen your child is absent due to illness or vacation, please call the office. If your child needs to leave early please send a note, go to the office at pickup time, and sign your child out at the office.

Breakfast, Snack, and Lunch
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Please encourage your child to eat a healthy breakfast before school in order to give them the energy and brainpower they need for the morning.
We will have snack time every morning so please be sure to send a nutritious snack and drink for your child everyday. Ideas for nutritious snacks may include a balance of: fresh fruits, vegetables, cheese, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, sliced ham/turkey/chicken, crackers, and/or pretzels. I also strongly encourage you to pack a water bottle with your first grader. If your child brings a lunchbox to school, please label it with his/her name and 1R. If your child buys lunch, please stop by to the cafeteria to make sure you have set up a lunch money account. BirthdaysWe will celebrate everyone’s birthday before the school year is through. For birthdays this year, the entire first grade will be food-free due to allergies and religious observations.
For each child's birthday we will: • Sing "Happy Birthday" (in as many languages as we can learn this year) • Create a special birthday card for your child with compliments and wishes for the year. We will NOT celebrate with treats or any other food this year. If you would like to bring something in to celebrate, you can make a book donation to our class in honor of your child's birthday. If you do so, we will write your child's name and birthday in the book and read it aloud during our birthday snack. In this way, your child can introduce and recommend a favorite book to our class. Please see me if you would like to donate, but need a suggestion for a title. If your child does not want to celebrate his/her birthday in school or does not feel comfortable with any of the above aspects of the celebration, please notify me so that the celebration can be appropriately modified. If your child's birthday falls on a weekend, we will celebrate on the school day before or after the actual birth date. If your child's birthday falls during the summer, we will celebrate it in June (date to be determined). |
